One way to get your band’s custom Facebook URL

If you’ve been waiting to get your band’s own custom URL for Facebook (http://facebook.com/yourband), I have a tip for you.

I created a brand new page for a band that I manage and, as expected, Facebook would not let me grab the custom URL, so I was stuck with the normal URL which looks like this: http://www.facebook.com/pages/yourband/8944193773. Ugly.

After a few weeks, I was still unable to get the custom URL. Frustrating as it was, we knew we still had to use Facebook to promote the release of the band’s new 2-song EP, so we took out an ad. Shortly thereafter (I don’t know the exact date because I wasn’t really expecting this to happen), I checked to see if we could secure the custom URL and sure enough even with only 20 fans, we were able to!

I assume that purchasing an ad through Facebook is their sneaky way of “verifying” that you deserve the custom URL. I also assume that it’s a bit of a “you scratch our back and we’ll scratch yours.”

So there you have it! If you’re desperate to get a custom Facebook URL for your band, take out an ad. If that sounds a little intimidating go read about how Facebooks ads work: http://www.facebook.com/advertising. You can set exactly how much you want to spend and you can even set it where you only spend money if people click on your ad.
